Topics
This session will address the growing tensions faced by patients seeking medical care in a fast evolving and globalized world where the healthcare compass is not aligned with the best interest of the patients. Nowadays, multiple external factors are influencing physicians, the business is also driving decisions under financial, cultural and societal trends that may clash with the “do no harm” principle as well as developing practices that are meant to put the patient first. In this context, it is critical to explore the challenges that are affecting medical practices and the rising disparities around the world in the nature of care provided to people and in the modalities of healthcare accessibility. The benefit versus the risk of all healthcare natures will be at the center of this discussion especially when medicine is responding to new societal demands.
This session will explore the role of Media and influencers, backed by new communication technologies, on children, adolescents and young adults with regards to mental disorders, self-harming behaviours, addictions and suicidal ideations, according to evidence collected from research and studies. Furthermore, it will explore how such technologies are also disrupting the role and place of the family and the educators and their responsibilities of supporting the well-being of youth. With the rapid progression of technological advances, it is difficult for families to keep up with the flow of information and interactions stimulating young minds and to maintain their role and credibility, especially when facing the epidemics of fake and misleading information. In this context it is of paramount importance to explore how to best utilize media and technology and reduce their potential deleterious effects.
This session will explore the overall population health and prevention policies and programs that are needed to reduce the prevalence of healthcare challenges across its spectrum. Such programs require long-term approaches backed up by solid evidence and clear choices in regards to the society as well as agility to face new threats as recently witnessed with the global pandemic. However, the social, political and economic environment is highly influential under emotions generated by the course of events and the perceived need for immediate action. Reflecting on how to promote stronger research backed up evidence is key for long term sustainable population health.
